Music Theory Books
You are welcome to visit a good music store (for example: Long & McQuade or Remenyi House of Music Ltd. or online - for example Sheet Music Plus), see what they have in stock, consult with the staff and buy one of the books listed below or another good book. If you do not know what to buy - consult with me and I will recommend a book depending on the age, level and musical instrument (if not voice).
The following books are for beginners to intermediate level students:
- For beginners and very young singers and musicians, I recommend The Full Voice™ Workbook Series. Retail locations and additional information about the workbooks and the supplemental theory books can be found on their website.
- For young singers - especially if they participate in serious choirs (or plan to) - you may want to look at A young Singer’s Journey Workbook Series by Eileen Baldwin, Jean Ashworth Bartle and Linda Beaupré. More information is avaialbe on the publisher’s website Hinshaw Music Inc..
- If you plan to take the RCM examinations you may find the Music Theory Publications by Mark Sarnecki and the Ear Training and Sight Reading Books and CDs by Carol Schlosar to be useful. You could also check out the Frederick Harris Music Publications Catalogue to find a specific book to suit your needs and your level.
- Free Music Theory Workbooks by Gilbert DeBenedetti: available to download (PDF format). Not as good as the above mentioned and do not target singers, but free.
